DESCRIPTON OF CONSTRUCTION FILES FOR THE MALAYSIA
1970-80-91 MERGED FILE
This is a datafile of the 1970 .02 sample of the census data and is located on the CSDE Workstation in the directory: /seafert/malaysia/data/census70/MALAY70.DAT (to work with the data users should uncompress the file). A fortran program created the matched woman-child-husband dataset MALAY70STD.DAT. Documentation about the census data are located in the 1970 Population Census of Malaysia .02 Sample - Master File: Data Documentation and Codebook. The files contains 39 variables, 175,882 unweighted individual records and 32062 households.
This is a data file of the 1980 .016 sample of the census data and is located on the CSDE Workstation in the directory: /seafert/malaysia/data/census80/MALAY80.DAT(to work with the data users should uncompress the file). A fortran program created the matched woman-child-husband dataset MALAY80STD.DAT. Documentation about the census data are located in the 1980 Population Census of Malaysia .05 Sample - Master File: Data Documentation and Codebook. The files contains 75 variables, 182,602 unweighted individual records. Data include individual demographic information as well as household characteristics.

The files contains 347,892 unweighted individual records. Data include individual demographic information as well as household characteristics (71,256 households).
MALAY70STD.DAT
This is a data file which includes information about women 15-49 years
old whose data are then matched to their children's data (age 10 and under)
and their husband's data (if they are married). The data are drawn from
1970 Malaysia Census data. The file is a column delimited raw dataset (see
1970
standardized data record list). Any unmatched children in the household
are attached to the first eligible woman in the household (for the matching
algorithm refer to Cho et al. 1986) .

on the /seafert/malaysia/data/census80/ directory and are in compressed
format.
This is an spss program file that reads the MALAY91STD.DAT file to recode variables and create a 1991 analysis file: MALAY91STD.POR. In particular, provinces are recoded to match the 1970 boundary definitions (for more information see the see 1991 standardized data record list)

This is a portable spss format data file of the matched women-child-husband
data (derived from MALAY91STD.DAT
). The file was created using the malay91std.sps
program located on the /seafert/malaysia/create/census91 directory. For
complete information on the contents of this data set refer to the Malaysia
1991 standardized data dictionary. The data are located on the /seafert/malaysia/data/census91
directory.
mcon91.sps
This is a program which creates the 1991 district or contextual data,
MCON91.POR.
The program is located in the /seafert/malaysia/create/contextuals directory.
This file contains the contextual variables for 1970 and 1980. The original SPSS program for creating these contextual variables is not available. The current contextual file was constructed by taking the mean of each variable for each district from the merged 1970-80 data file (an earlier version stored in a tape). The spss program is here.

This is a program which merges the 1970,80,91 fertility portable data
with the provincial or contextual data. The program is located in the /seafert/malaysia/create/merged
directory.
MCON91.POR
The contextual data are a combination of aggregate information as well
as global information for each province in Malaysia. Sources for the data
are from 1991 Malaysia Census file. The data are located on the /seafert/malaysia/data/contextuals
directory.
MALAY789MRG.POR
This a merged dataset of the contextual data and the three censuses
(MALAY70STD.POR, MALAY80STD.POR, and MALAY91STD.POR). The data are
located on /csde/seafert/malaysia/data/merged directory.
