Marriage Patterns
The impact of the contextual variables on fertility might be direct on
marital fertility, or indirect via the postponement of marriage. The status
of women variables seem most likely to influence the incidence of very
early marriage. We, therefore, include an indicator of the level of marital
postponement (percent of women, aged 15-24, who are never married) in the
province as an intervening variable between the other contextual variables
and fertility.
