Migration Experience

Migration is based on the standard census questions of place of birth, current residence, length of residence, and previous residence.

With Thai data, migrants (for both 1970 and 1980) are defined in terms of duration of residence within a village/municipal area. Those women who had resided in their present locality for less than five years were classified as migrants.

For Indonesia, migrants (for both 1971 and 1980) are defined in terms of duration of residence within a province. Those women who had resided in their present province for five years or less were classified as migrants.

For the Philippines, migrants (for both 1970 and 1980) are defined in terms of place of residence five years before the census. Only residence in different provinces on the two dates is treated as migration.

For Peninsular Malaysia, migrants (for both 1970 and 1980) are defined in terms of duration of residence within a kampong/town. Those women who had resided in their present locality for five years or less were classified as migrants.
