DATA ARCHIVE OVERVIEW

The Southeast Asia Fertility Project is based on data from the 1970, 1980, and 1990 rounds of populations censuses in the four countries. For each census file, we extracted samples of women in the reproductive years. For each woman, we appended the characteristics of her husband (if she was married), and matched information on "own children" from the household  record. We also attached to each record, a series of contextual variables based on the characteristics of the province or district in which she lived. Finally, we merged files across years for each country in order to run models of temporal change. This sequence of very complex and time-consuming tasks is outlined in the flow charts on the attached pages for each country. The data archive contains the data files for each step of the process as well as the computer programs (syntax files) used to create files or to process them. Potential users should study the data documentation and computer programs carefully before selecting the appropriate data files.
